Applying Engobe

Before firing, Jieshou pottery undergoes a process called "applying makeup clay" (or slip), which involves coating the clay surface with a fine clay slurry. This layer of slip, when fired, forms a thin, colored surface on the pottery. In Jieshou Colored Pottery, this process is typically done using a pouring technique and is divided into two steps: applying the "Powder Slip" and the "White Slip." After firing, these slips give the pottery its distinctive red and ivory carved patterns.

Applying Powder Slip

The powder slip, also known as "glaze clay," appears as a light gray powder and is primarily sourced from the Taozhuang Lake area within Jieshou. The clay is finely ground, sieved to remove impurities, and then mixed with water to create a smooth slurry. This slurry is poured over the clay body, coating it evenly. During the firing process, the powder slip transforms into a rich reddish-brown hue, which forms the base color of Jieshou's tri-colored pottery.

Applying White Slip

Once the piece with the powder slip has completely air-dried, the white slip is applied using the same pouring technique. The white slip is finer in texture than the powder slip and, after firing, takes on an ivory shade. To ensure the final piece has an even and consistent appearance, the white slip must be applied with a specific thickness to avoid color inconsistencies or areas where the underlying red shows through. This meticulous layering of slips is what gives Jieshou pottery its unique red and white carved appearance.
